Hidden Kyoto Machiya Beyond a Shrine Approach, for Sale in Nakano-cho, Higashiyama Ward

A Beautifully Renovated Kyoto Townhouse Surrounded by History and Nature

Tucked away at the end of a quiet shrine approach, this beautifully renovated Kyoto machiya offers a rare opportunity to experience authentic Kyoto living in one of the city’s most culturally rich neighborhoods.

Located near the prestigious Okazaki district, the property sits beside Aizuchi Inari Shrine, a hidden sanctuary associated with the legendary swordsmith Sanjo Munechika, who is said to have forged the famous sword Kogitsunemaru. Stepping through the vermilion torii gates, you’ll discover a peaceful world where traditional townhouses and centuries of history remain beautifully preserved.

Originally built in the Meiji era, this machiya was thoughtfully renovated in July 2026 while preserving its original character. Exposed timber beams, traditional earthen walls, and authentic architectural details have been carefully retained, creating a warm atmosphere that cannot be replicated in modern construction.

The first floor has been reconfigured into a spacious open-plan living and dining area, while the former tori-niwa (traditional passageway) has been transformed into a versatile display space with soaring ceilings. Brand-new kitchen and bathroom facilities, new tatami flooring, and underfloor heating provide modern comfort throughout the seasons. Upstairs, the exposed original beams create an airy space that celebrates the craftsmanship of a traditional machiya.

Beyond serving as a private residence, this unique property is also well suited as a holiday home, art gallery, boutique, or creative studio.

Just a 7-minute walk from the iconic giant torii gate of Heian Shrine and approximately 5 minutes from Higashiyama Station (Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line), the home enjoys excellent access while remaining quietly tucked away.

The surrounding area offers some of Kyoto’s finest cultural attractions, including the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, Kyoto City Library, the scenic Lake Biwa Canal, Okazaki Park, and numerous historic temples and shrines. Throughout the year, residents can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, brilliant autumn foliage, and peaceful winter scenery—all within walking distance.

This is more than a home; it is an opportunity to embrace the timeless beauty, history, and tranquility that define Kyoto.
